Frequently Asked Questions

  • Which airports serve Kalkan
The closest airport is Dalaman (pictured above) which is usually about 100 minutes away if driving or using a transfer service and is the most prevalent arrival/departure airport for holidaymakers staying in Kalkan. Click here to find out about the facilities on offer and up to date arrival/departure times. Kalkan is also reachable from Antalya airport which has more flight options especially over the quieter seasons and can sometimes be a considerably cheaper option. The only downside is that transfer times are closer to 3 hours although it's a pretty journey if you arrive in daylight hours. • When and where is the market?
The closest one is the Kalkan Thursday Market. It starts early in the morning till early evening time. The location of the market is here. There is one more market, the Akbel market, that one is on Sundays located here. It is also walkable but only by very fit people as you have to climb a few hills on the way. Most people will take a taxi there and then just walk back down. Its quite similar to the Thursday one but a bit more local in flavour. Lot less touristy stuff and a lot more stalls for locals. One special feature of this one is the point and cook fish stall that you should experience. There are a few other notable markets within driving (or busing) distance. There are many more that are very local and would not be of interest for visitors (just local fruits and veg). Other notable ones: Kaş market on Fridays : very similar to Kalkan but bigger. Its an excuse to visit the much larger town. Kınık market on Fridays : very similar to Akbel, but much bigger. Very local, targeting local farming community. Fethiye Tuesday market : the largest market in the area, worth a visit and an excuse to go to Fethiye. Fethiye Friday market : fruits and veg only. Huge variety and full of colours.

  • Where can you see & swim with Turtles
The Turquoise Coast of Türkiye is full of beaches and coves there Loggerhead Sea Turtles / Caretta Caretta come to lay their eggs and at times, just hang out. These turtles are quite elusive creatures and if you happen to see them in the wild, consider yourself lucky. If you get the opportunity to swim with them, even better but there is no guarantee as they can be shy. They come to Patara beach every year to lay eggs. They are protected and it is strictly illegal to go near them, touch them, harass them in any way during the time when they are laying their eggs. If you happen to see them in/around Patara, stay away. The fines are not small (just below £10,000 in 2024) They do regularly show up at various beach clubs and if you find a higher vantage point, there is a good change you will be able to see one or two during your stay. If you wish to increase your chances of seeing them, 2 things you can do: Go see Kaptan Levent. His fishing boat is very close to the town beach. He seems to know where the harbour ones are as I always see him posting pictures of them. He is friendly and always around if he is not out with the customers. Follow Kaptan Levent's Instagram account for lots of sea creatures. Alt suggestion : go visit MadMax, who normally resides in Kastellorizo / Meis island 🇬🇷 If you take a trip with Captain Osman Muslu, you're pretty much guaranteed to see Mad Max. Here are a couple of short videos for you to enjoy, bot come from Visit Kalkan Online IG account Video One : Mad Max visits Selin3 Video Two : Mad Max in Greece Beware : they are curious creatures and have been known to nip, nibble and bite. They are not trying to eat you 😹 but are playful. If you are prone to panic, please watch from afar.
